Prof. Stephen O. Kwankye is an Associate Professor of the Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS) at the University of Ghana, Legon. He holds PhD in Population Studies with specialisation in adolescent sexual and reproductive health issues. He has undergone skills training in population and health communication, monitoring and evaluation in Ghana and the USA and has facilitated several advocacy workshops and training seminars on population and development interrelationships, adolescent reproductive health and demographic data collection, monitoring and evaluation and data adjustment. He has tremendous experience in conducting both quantitative and qualitative research related to population and reproductive health. In the 2009 Migration Study carried out by RIPS, Prof. Kwankye had the added responsibility of interviewing numerous stakeholders about the phenomenon.
He worked with a team to produce a national migration policy and a strategic plan for Ghana (2012-2014) and between 2011 and 2014 worked on secondment to the National Population Council as the Executive Director. He also coordinated a Ghana Sustainable Change Project (GSCP) research on reproductive health in seven regions in Ghana. He again worked as the Principal Investigator in “The Oxytocin Initiative: Exploring use of uterotonic substances at or around birth in three regions in Ghana”. Besides this, Prof. Kwankye prepared a report for CARE, Ghana on “Sexual and Reproductive Health of the Youth and Family Planning in Ghana with a focus on Ashanti Region” in 2009.
He was also the Principal Investigator of the “Barriers to Condom Use in Ghana Study” in 2011. He was the lead researcher on the preparation of the “Children, Adolescents and Young People in Ghana” and “Urbanization in Ghana” Monographs for the Ghana Statistical Service based on the 2010 Population and Housing Census. He developed the 2016-2020 Strategic Plan of the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) and the 2018-2022 Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection on Adolescent Pregnancy in Ghana. His research interests are in adolescent sexual and reproductive health, migration especially independent child migration, fertility, population and development interrelationships, and demographic data collection.
