INTERNATIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS BY TWO RIPS FACULTY
The Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS) is proud to announce and celebrate the appointments of two of its senior faculty, Prof. Ama de-Graft Aikins, and Prof. Francis Dodoo to a four-year Global Professorship from the British Academy.
The British Academy is the UK’s leading organisation for the humanities and social sciences, and its Global Professorships programme aims to demonstrate and further enhance the UK’s commitment to international research partnerships and collaboration as well as strengthen the UK’s research capacity and capability in the humanities and the social sciences.
Prof. Ama de-Graft Aikins is a Professor in Social Psychology at the Regional Institute for Population Studies, University of Ghana. She was awarded the Global Professorship in 2018, as one of only ten outstanding scholars from around the world, under the first round of the programme. She is currently being hosted by the Institute of Advanced Studies at University College London for her fellowship and carrying out the project titled “Chronicity and Care in African Contexts”.
Prof. de-Graft Aikins has worked extensively on non-communicable disease (NCD) research and has furthered the knowledge on diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease perceptions and experiences in urban and rural poor contexts in Ghana as well as among Ghanaian migrants in Europe. Prof. Ama de-Graft Aikins was also elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in October 2019 as one of 10 international members.
These are extreme international honors. Prior to winning the Global Professorship, Prof. de-Graft Aikins was the Dean of International Programmes and was a past Director of the Centre for Social Policy Studies, both at the University of Ghana. Her research grants have funded scholarships for several MPhil and PhD students at the University of Ghana. RIPS is proud of Prof. de-Graft Aikins for her string of tremendous accomplishments. Prof. Francis Nii Amoo Dodoo, a Professor in Demography at the Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS), University of Ghana, received the four-year Global Professorship from the British Academy in 2020. He will embark on this Fellowship at the University of Oxford’s Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science at the Department of Sociology and Nuffield College in January 2021.
Prof. Dodoo’s research during the Professorship will further his studies on bridewealth payment and its implications for women’s autonomy in Sub-Saharan Africa in addition to other demographic and health research. Prof. Francis Dodoo is the immediate past Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Development at the University of Ghana. Prior to that he was the Acting Director of the Institute of African Studies (IAS) and the Director of the Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS), both at the University of Ghana.
His Hewlett Foundation research grants funded several MPhil and PhD students at the University of Ghana.
